Gypsy Caravans to St. Louis

Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room, KSHE radio and Bedrock Records hosted an evening with Gypsy on Saturday, December 9, 2000, to the delight of over 300 loyal followers. Talk to any member of Gypsy and they all agree St. Louis fans are the GREATEST.

The anticipation of the crowd was evident as Karen Nesbitt videotaped interviews with waiting fans. It has been a year since Gypsy last caravanned down to the Gateway City. The line started forming at 5 PM and by seven it meandered like the mighty Mississippi, forking in two directions through the upper level of Blueberry Hill and out the door. Fans chatted Gypsy memories from the last 30 years, the message of the music and its presence throughout their lives creating a common bond. By the time the doors opened at 8:30 and the audience descended into the cellar of the duck room the energy could have been used to power the entire West Side of St. Louis. Instead, it was drawn on by the musicians and the performance was the best this fan has seen since the early seventies.

Gypsy played two sets, beginning the first with their signature opening note, then belting out the harmony “Warning…Warning“. The chord moved into Around You and the crowd was hooked.

Set I

Around You
The Third Eye
Decision
Blind Man
Dead and Gone
The Innocence
Here in the Garden - Part I
Drum Solo (featuring Stan Kipper)
Here in Garden - Part II
Facing Time

This is the first performance of Facing Time since the band reformed in 1998. It was well rehearsed and left the audience buzzing during the break.

Sherre from Bedrock Records introduced the second set, which began with a tribute to Enrico Rosenbaum the singer/songwriter, who wrote most of Gypsy’s music during their recording years. James Walsh’s feelings about Rico were memorialized in a beautiful piano ballad Look at My Angel Fly. Then newest member, Al Mevissen, soloed his The Best I’ve Ever Known, his distinctive voice crisp and melodic. The entire band returned for Twenty Years Ago Today and Crusader.

The howlin’ blues vocals and seductive riffs of Jim Johnson, original lead guitarist, were featured with his newest offering Rogue’s Moon. Then Mark “Chico” Perez and his talking drum took center stage to continue the arousal of the crowd.

Gypsy returned to album one, keeping the audience satisfied with I Was SoYoung and Here In My Loneliness. Then Dave Challman, acoustic guitarist, gave an animated performance of Running In and Out. The second set concluded with Tomorrow is the Last to Be Heard.

The crowd begged for more and were rewarded with two encores, Gypsy Queen and As Far As You Can See (As Much As You Can Feel). Following the performance, Gypsy joined their fans for conversations and autographs, a wonderful ending to a powerful night.

Thank you to St. Louis and especially, Dave M., Steve K., Sherre and the entire staff at Bedrock Records for their hospitality. You made our long journey worth every minute.

Show was held at Main Event in Fridley, Minnesota on September 9th, 2000.

An intimate crowd with a party atmosphere gathered at the Main Event in Fridley, Minnesota to lavish in the offering from our favorite group of musicians. After a long sound check Gypsy handed the stage to BEC to perform the warm up. The audience was appreciative, but definitely there to hear one band.

Gypsy did not disappoint us. Their music is always wonderful and well received. "Crusader" was added to the set, to the delight of everyone who appreciates the works on Antithesis. Thank you Stan, Chico, Dave, Al, Bobby, Owl and Jim for keeping this music alive.
