It all starts with a band formed by James Calvin Johnson and Doni Larson in 1962,
in Minnesota, named the Underbeats. The members of the Underbeats (1968): James
Walsh, Enrico Rosenbaum, and Jim Johnson, plus Doni Larson, and Tom Green(aka
Tom Nystrom, of the old Underbeats)/(later, Minnesotan Jay Epstein, drums) moved
to California in November. The Underbeats moniker was considered "dated", so Doni
came up with a new name, Gypsy. The band released 4 albums between 1970 and 1973.
With all that talent, they should have went national. But, it didn't happen. They
disbanded in 1975. James Walsh carried on for several years afterward. Enrico,
sadly, died September 10th, 1979, in LA (not New York). He was an excellent
singer/songwriter, very talented. What a waste. He brought a beautiful sadness
to his writing.
